Kings and Queens 2

Queen Elizabeth I

Queen Elizabeth I
Queen Elizabeth I was born to King Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn at the Palace of Placentia in Greenwich, England on September 7, 1533. At the age of two and a half she was declared illegitimate as Anne Boleyn had been executed and Henry VIII had his marriage to her annulled. Elizabeth’s half brother Edward VI ascended the throne in 1547 and bequeathed the throne to Lady Jane Grey when he died. The will was contested and Elizabeth’s half sister Mary acceded to the throne in 1553. When Mary died in 1553, Elizabeth became Queen Elizabeth I and the period known as the Elizabethan Era, began. Despite several courtships Elizabeth I never married and she became known as the virgin queen. Early in her reign Elizabeth established an English Protestant Church and in February 1570 was declared a heretic by Pope Pius V. It was during Elizabeth’s reign that the Spanish Armada of 130 ships was defeated by England and several playwrights including William Shakespeare and Christopher Marlowe came to prominence. It was also reported that the wreck of the Mary Rose was still visible during Elizabeth's reign. After a reign of 44 years, Elizabeth I died on March 24, 1603, in Richmond Palace.

King George V

King George V
Prince George Frederick Ernest Albert was born to Albert, Edward, Prince of Wales, on June 3, 1865, in London, England. He served in the Royal Navy from 1877 to 1891, and on July 11, 1881, aboard HMS Inconstant with his brother, it was logged that he spotted the mythical ship Flying Dutchman off Australia. In 1892 George became second in line for the throne after the death, from pneumonia, of his elder brother Prince Albert Victor. George married Princess Victoria Mary of Teck (later known as Mary), his elder brother’s former fiancée, on July 6, 1893, and the couple, who remained devoted to each other, had six children. When his father ascended the throne in 1901, George was made Prince of Wales, and on May 6, 1910, when his father Edward VII died, George ascended the throne as King George V. The coronation of King George V and Queen Mary took place on June 22, 1911, at Westminster Abbey, London. As part of the celebrations there was a Coronation Fleet Review which included the battleship Dreadnought. George V died on January 20, 1936, in Norfolk and was buried in St. George’s Chapel, Windsor. The ocean liners RMS Queen Mary and RMS Queen Mary 2 were named after Mary of Teck.
